57: Satawan Songs

The past couple of nights, we went to one of the community houses (nahs) in our village to hear the 200 visitors from Satawan sing! Friday is the inauguration of a new president of the FSM, and since apparently they are a renowned choir, that’s why they came over (by ship). One really great thing about the choir that I only learned after the first night is that they created all their own lyrics, making them about the president / inauguration!
By the way, for clarification purposes:

FSM: the country, composed of 4 states: Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei, Kosrae
Pohnpei state: consists of Pohnpei, Pakin, Ant, and a bunch of outer islands
Chuuk state: consists of Chuuk, and a bunch of outer island groups, including the Mortlock islands
Mortlock islands: includes Satawan (where my Pahpa’s family is originally from), and Namoluk (where my Nohno was born and grew up – it’s also the smallest atoll in Micronesia, a little smaller than Pakin). Mortlockese (what we speak at home) is a dialect of Chuukese.

The Satawan choir was really great, everyone loved it! My Nohno loved it so much, she said she couldn’t help herself and started co-conducting the choir (her way of dancing). She had a towel on her head for some reason, I really should have taken a picture.
To give you an idea, they had an e-piano and big sound boxes, and the rest was singing. These 200 singers all crammed into the nahs and sat cross legged (for 4 straight hours every night!). Almost all of the songs included “dance” elements. Dance meaning choreographed movements, but they didn’t stand up. So just swaying, clapping, and all kinds of cool things that are difficult to describe (I took videos, but can’t upload them here). Also part of the Chuukese culture is to throw candy into the choir, and go around spraying them with (mild) perfume.

In Chuuk (state), upcycling old rice bags is a thing. They make bags, pouches, backpacks, hats, and caps out of them. It’s pretty cool!
