These crabs are super delicious – they’re tender and stringy
like good chicken nuggets O.O (yes, I’m still a vegetarian at heart, that’s a
whole other story). This particular individual was caught by a relative of my
host dad, and is particularly big, I’m told. We traded three of them for a
bottle of rum, whoopee!
Fun Facts about the mangrove crab: it plays an important
part for food security, meaning that if you don’t have any money, you can go
out into the mangroves and catch them, which a lot of people do. You have to be
somewhat skilled though, cause their pinchers are super strong – if you don’t
grab them the right way on the first try, you won’t have any fingers to grab a
second time.
